Why Not? The Amazing Race Did It – The Temple of Rats

That morning I woke up and asked my dad again, “Are you sure you still want to visit the Temple of Rats?” And… he says yes, of course, if the Amazing Race did it, then we can too. So I get out my socks. Here we go again… another day in India.

The Temple of Rats, officially known as Karni Mata Temple in Deshnoke, India is a Hindu temple and yes, the rats are very holy. When we arrived, I think I had stopped breathing. I told myself to focus. So I do what I do and began to analyze how other people were walking through the temple but each person had their own strategy and I was beginning to get confused. So screw it… I decide to go for it…I walk in, I try to look brave, I look around a bit to make sure I don’t actually step on a rat, but this is HARD because they are EVERYWHERE, scurrying as they do, but now it is like a bad amusement ride… you are in the middle of it and there is no turning back. So I rip my way through the temple as elegantly as I can (it is a temple after all) and breathe a sigh of relief when it is over.

My dad definitely owed me one after that.

I’ve never heard of this place Cheryl, and am intrigued. To my western mind Hindus appear to have lots of interesting ideas, but holy rats? Not sure of that one. I’ll have to do a bit of research on this temple. BTW, I love your masthead photo. ~James

It is an experience but a quick one! I have never moved through a temple in such haste before.
