The Purple Hair Episode of “The Good Mom”

What is it about this little town in Ontario that set the colour purple on fire and has now consumed my daughter, Jade?

The purple volcano, otherwise known as Jade, began to warm up in October, showed signs of bubbling over in December and finally erupted in May.

To prevent a complete melt down, my husband and I actually spent my birthday romantically engaged in Jade getting half of her head purple as some sort of a teen/parents compromise. We actually loved it especially when she did her hair in french braids, weaving purple and blonde together looked stunning. At least in the tainted purplish mother’s eyes of a teen!

My first compromise! Half a head of purple :)

My first compromise! Half a head of purple 🙂

Now I love purple and always have. I usually have a purple bathroom, a favourite purple fleece to wear and when in need, purple grapes to eat. I don’t shy away from the colour.

But purple around me and on me is different from purple on a head, isn’t it? I tried to convince myself but was told differently.

As the half head of purple began to fade, the relentless questions began to build. Until they were no longer questions, and became some sort of an activist social demand that I could no longer out argue. Yes, I caved. Or I would like to say, I became “The Good Mom”. Yes, I have been watching way too many episodes of The Good Wife, so hence my new creation.

Told to at least wait until her musical theatre performances were done (she was a blonde sister to two other blonde sisters) she ripped to the bathroom, closed the door while I “patiently” waited outside for the unveiling.

The door blocking off the purple hair plan.

Now, being a teen and doing her hair, this actually meant hours in the bathroom as I faded to sleep, haunted by purple nightmares. Then I woke up. Impatient for the final reveal, I sat at my computer trying to blog with visions of purple dancing through my head. If Jade has crazy purple hair, what does this say about me?

I guess, I will go with the fact that I am trying to be “The Good Mom”.  And I know. I shouldn’t sweat the small stuff, even if the small stuff is really purple stuff.

And unlike a tattoo, it washes out, right?

But I know that episode is up the street and around the corner… but I will worry about that later…three years later… I hope!

From Cheryl and The Family C who have 4 girls; one piercing (she was of age), one purple hair (I guess of age) and let’s leave it at that. Pleeeeaaase. 🙂

Oh my! I just had to edit this post since Miss Jade didn't approve of my purple pic of her head! This one has been approved by Jade.

Have you or a family member had a “different” hair colour or style before?

Oh what beautiful girls Cheryl! How fortunate for them to get to explore so much of this great world while in their youth. They get a pass on the hair….it’s cute on them :-)!

  2. It looks pretty dang awesome, Good Mom. You’re on the right track. I can attest from many salon visits that older women are not immune to the purple/pink/green/red & white hair fashion statements. 😀 I’ve seen it all. My own woman-child did a verra hot purple black. I’m thinking…. No. Wait! Don’t go there.

She just got home from school and apparently it was the purple bomb! That is a good thing, in teen language.

I’m here from Fat-Bottom-Fifties Get Fierce! You’ve covered more ground than Jade has purple hairs! Sounds fascinating. I don’t have purple-haired kids, but we do have some commonalities – such as being attorneys and grabbing that cup of coffee to go! As a Family Law attorney who often represents children, I really understand the dynamics and challenges of the blended family – which always work better when one has a good sense of humor as you obviously do! Looking forward to more blog chat!

Thanks! Yes, one purple haired kid is enough but she is loving it so that is what is important. I am happy that I found your blog and look forward to some witty ways to handle the age thing!!! And to get fierce 🙂

Jade’s gorgeous with purple hair! I love the all purple as opposed to half blonde half purple. Brings out her beautiful eyes. I see lots of adult women these days sporting different shades of blue and purple and pink. I would love to add a few turquoise highlights (my favourite colour). I colour my hair dark brown or black with mahogany. I was blonde for 15 years and I got tired of forking out $150 a pop to upkeep the highlights.

Thanks! Turqoise sounds really nice as highlights. I was worried about the whole head thing as opposed to highlights and part of (she has had orange highlights as well) but she loves it and is very happy, so what could a mom want more? The colour mahogany has always been a fav of mine too. And yes cheaper is better!!!

Yep, $9 from Shoppers Drug Mart 🙂 And I forgot to mention the obvious which is that you are an awesome mom for giving her breathing room to make a decision that might not have worked out. Thankfully it did. 🙂

My older sisters advice to me when my son was little was to let them do whatever they want with their hair. It will always grow back or get cut or be returned to its original colour. There are way worse things that they could be doing. For what its worth, I love the purple.

Yes, we have now learned the same thing. It does grow back or the dye leaves at some point so the temporary nature of it is really no big deal. And now that it is over, I am so happy she went ahead and did it as she is so happy! Good advice from your older sister 🙂

I think your daughter looks lovely! She’s expressing her personal style and she looks so happy and content.
I have an equally lovely niece whose hair has been many colors; red, blue, purple, a little of each. She had a beautiful baby boy 5 months ago and has been so busy with motherhood that she’s let her hair go back to its natural brunette state. She looks even more lovely now.

Thanks. She was a very happy girl today with her new look. Having something unique, does suit her personality.

    I love her purple hair.

That was me … at least until I finally let my hair go to its natural grey. I’ve done virtually every colour .. and I was much older than your daughter. In fact one day my boss came into my office and asked if he should be worried that the person responsible for risk management in the company was now sporting neon blue hair.
Both of my sons later followed in their mom’s footsteps.

Hair colour is temporary … I say have fun with it 🙂

Ah that is too funny! Neon blue in risk management. She is in such a happy mood today with it. Went grocery shopping and one person stopped her to say they liked it and another had the same colour. She was right… and yes it is temporary. 🙂

No wonder she’s happy – her hair looks great and it makes her feel great! 🙂

She looks great! I went through that phase from about 18-20. Green, purple, fire engine red. My little sister, who just finished her first year of college, is going through it too. Bright green, last I saw. But don’t worry – you’re right, it does wash out.

I guess she is in good company then 🙂 I can’t imagine the green though!

Back in the 80’s I used to dye part of my reddish blonde hair, black. I let the black part grow and wore it in a long braid (tail) while the rest of my hair was much shorter. I thought I was so radical. lol

I was never one for the odd colors – though there was some very fake looking red there for a while. And bad blonde streaks. Of course, I was in college at the time, so the parents didn’t have much of a say. And I quickly thought better of both and went back to the natural brown. Or mostly natural (and mostly still brown, thankfully) today.
