Confused? Me too.
In Egypt, the school week ends on Thursday and begins on Sunday.
You know how many times I have taught the calendar in Canada? Colouring it, labelling it, playing with it in Grade 3 land? I have this calendar thing totally memorized.
And now… at the ripe old age of (be kind), I have to relearn it?
Chris and I have been practicing. When it is Sunday, I remind him that I will be working. When it is early Saturday afternoon and his weekend is just underway, mine will be ending. The more we practice, the worse I get.
I simply can’t imagine beginning my work week on a Sunday.
I guess Mondays are going to be a whole lot better!
And Tuesdays which are no big deal in Canada have now been upgraded to a much higher status.
And no more TGIF.
It is all about TGIT.
That has a good ring to it.
Yikes! It is Saturday already. My weekend is almost over 😦

That gave me a bit of a headache. Yikes! I’m partial to Sunday — the lazy end of the weekend, the beginning of a new week and all its adventures.

Yup it gives me a headache as well. I am used to change but changing the “week” is not one that will be easy. I have always loved Sundays for the same reason as you.

Saturday and Sunday are my favorite days! Oh yeah and Friday too! Well you have some stuff to get used to huh? Your big day will be here before you know it!

Yes, true as I stare at the pile of boxes to go thru in the garage of who knows what teaching materials! I love my weekends as well but it will take some time to get used to thinking that Sunday is no longer part of the weekend.

So it will be more than a new language to get used to, it will also be a whole new way of looking at every week! Hopefully once you are settled in the readjustment will come quickly.

That’s so exciting! So did you leave from Canada and now you’re having different teaching experiences around the world? (I read that you were in Uganda and Guatemala). That would be such a brave and cool project!!

No I have been teaching in Canada but travelling during my breaks. I also used to travel a lot and lived overseas before I went into teaching. I was a lawyer before and then did some international development work as well as taught English.

I have always been a bit of a risk taker and have always loved travelling. Combining my work and my passion for travel has been a perfection combination for me in the past. I hope it continues to be so in the future.

Yes, it doesn’t seem like it is the large things that make us feel like we are abroad but it is the smaller things.

I had a hard time when I was working and going to school because my work week started on Sunday but my school week for my online classes started on Tuesday so I always struggled to plan around the 2 different calendars. Good luck with the adjustment! Just like anything else it’ll just take some time. I know it’ll be weird for me once I get back to work to get used to being on any kind of schedule because right now all the days of the week are kind of the same for me.

I know exactly what you mean. And you get used to it so quickly! But you will adapt back to the work week easily, especially if it is the job that you want!

At the American Embassy in Cairo the Marines used to have a party every Thursday night called TGIT. I bet they still do, and if you make friends (which you most certainly will) with people who work at the embassy, you can go and enjoy a cold drink on a hot Egyptian night. It is fun! You’ll love it!

Yes, many times. I haven’t been for over ten years now though. My husband goes more frequently since his mom and sister still live there.

That is why. I just think after so many years of knowing that Monday is the beginning of the work week, it will feel unusual. I will learn to adapt!

You will get used to it, sort of… As of now, being in Saudi since October of last year, I still mistake the days because of the work week differences! Even today I thought it was Sunday, since my husband has to go back to work tomorrow. And then on Monday when you see people stressing over the Monday blues on Facebook, you will already have it conquered!

It is the one thing that is so ingrained from teaching that it just seems odd to me. I am hoping I can avoid teaching the calendar at a minimum 🙂 I am sure there are a ton of adjustments to make as you have been doing in Saudi.
