So as the heat wave continues, we ventured out to the Nile for some respite. I am not sure a breeze was actually felt, but seeing the water cooled us down…slightly.
It is hard to get your head wrapped around the “This is the Nile River!” fact as water is water but the surroundings made it known that we were indeed in Egypt. Looking out to the shore, it was easy to decipher that this was no river in Canada. Palm trees, brown sandy buildings (they scream, we are in the Middle East now!), and cars honking were left behind as we slowly drifted down the river. Fishermen (fisher people?) were out in their long thin boats sometimes used as their homes. Address: The Nile River π
What was most outstanding was the sun set. A spectacular orange foggy glow appeared as the sun set. As this was the first teacher event, I spent most of my time conversing with new colleagues and discovering what drove them to teaching in Egypt.
Jade, on the other hand, spent time at a special place at the back of the boat with another teen which of course made her experience even more wonderful. Her words after we docked the boat, “This was the best day in Egypt so far!”
I love those words.
Wonder when I will hear them again.
Maybe tomorrow at the pyramids?
Wow! That was a lovely way to start life in Cairo, a beautiful sunset on the Nile River!!!! God, I still can’t believe Ikea is THERE as well!!!!!π§π§π§

Yes, it is as well as a ton of fast food restaurants and many stores such as Marks and Spencers!

Really? I had a first visit to Nairobi last week and they don’t have any of those there. How strange with so many Brits around!

Breathtaking sunset, Cheryl! And now I’m looking forward to your visit to the pyramids.

Thank you. Our visit went well, sort of a in a surreal way. We knew we were there seeing them but it just didn’t feel like they or we were actually there. Have to write about it.

You should write about it. I’d love to read it!

I think I need to revisit it and do it again. My focus was on my new colleagues and teaching more than on the Nile! I am certain I will get a chance again sometime soon!

Ohhh Cheryl. Sooo wonderful the time you’re spending with Jade. When she’s 80 she’ll be recounting the good old days – and I’m sure Egypt will be at the top-ish of her list. Sunsets are my favourite. Is being a vegetarian relatively easy in Egypt?

Thanks so much. I don’t know yet about being a veg here as we have been eating at home mostly and when we have been out, it has been Americanized or even in Ikea! One of Egypt’s national dishes is totally veg though – lentils, pasta and rice… the carb overload so that one will be fine!

I’m vegetarian, too, so I’m curious on your take of the culture. But it looks like you had a wonderful time and the pyramids, (Oh, my gosh!), that will be very exciting for you both. Bonding time for sure!

Yes, it was bonding and sweating time together… π

Wow, Ikea eh. Stupid question, but is it just like the Ikea here in Ontario?

There are no stupid questions. I am a teacher and we always say that! Ikea is exactly 100 percent the same as any you wld find in Ontario. They even had the swedish meatballs in the restaurant. My vegetarian dish of grilled veggies in the restaurant might have been a tad different than in Canada but even when I went to buy something, the guy had me go back to become a family member so I would get a better price. Oh and there were a lot more women dressed much more conservatively than in Ontario though!!!

No tube tops and cut-off jean shorts? Yeah the dress code is to be expected of course. If you’re missing home you could always go hang out at Ikea π

Yes, Jade and I have thought of that! And of course, it has glorious A/C.

Thank you. Everyday feels like an adventure at the moment. Even trying to find cell phone service for my daughter. We have tried 4 times so far and this weekend will be our 5th!
