It was confirmed yesterday that I am the world’s worst history student.
I am living in Egypt and despite a very talented tour guide, I struggle to retain historical facts. So as we ventured outside Cairo to visit more pyramids in the Saqqarah and Dahshur areas, I was probably more enamoured with the green fields, the date palm trees, the camels, the goats, the sheep and the donkey carts of everyday life in Egypt. Do I have pictures of those? Of course not. But someday… I will manage to get a few.
In the meantime, we saw a lot, we learned a lot and well… I retained a little. Jade braved the “bent down steep incline into a pyramid” while I waited outside. I did venture into one pyramid that involved “less folding over” and was rewarded by my first sighting of hieroglyphics. The pyramids are far from the hustle and bustle of Cairo, set quietly and elegantly in the desert.
Egypt is so much more than its pyramids but it is its pyramids that make it unique and extra special. Overall, a fascinating country with a history that amazes and confuses me daily!
It sounds like you guys are doing okay over there. That’s good. I have always wanted to see the Pyramids – maybe someday!!!!

Lovely to have you back! Thought a lot of you when I heard the news about Sharm el-Sheikh, nice to hear all is safe there. Thanks for sharing your experience in the pyramids, that is definitely something I would like to do one day (although I’m not sure I will make it into one of them! so scary…) 😉

so happy to be catching up with you! Glad you made it here and are enjoying life – yes, it’s a confusing mess in Egypt, but if you keep your sense of humor it will be much easier in the long run. funnier, too! have fun!

It is a special place that was never on my travel radar but happily I have been able to experience a part of it so far.

I was wondering how you were doing! so glad you are settling in. So you did go into the Egyptian pyramid tunnel? They are so narrow. It looks like you were able to go during a less busy time than us.

My daughter went into a larger pyramid and it was like a tunnel but on a steep decline. I went into one that involved less of a decline and was a shorter distance to enter. Her legs hurt for quite some time after it is grueling entering and exiting. Yes, not busy at all!

There is something about the pyramids though isn’t there – I remember going in one and just thinking I’m in a pyramid! A real one! Not a Vegas imitation! PS Glad to hear you feel safe despite all the goings-on in Sharm. I just had a guest post published on another site about our holiday in Hurghada in 2013 – I feel terrible for all those people whose income will be devastated by this….

Yes, I am sure they will be affected greatly. I did go inside one pyramid (not a grand or large one) and it is definitely a unique experience.

So glad to see you posting again! I wouldn’t go in that pyramid either….

Jade said it smelled a lot of ammonia and the minute she was down, she ran back up. She is still sore today from the bent over steep incline in and out. Hope Turkey is treating you well!

Great photos and I love the quirky photo of the bicycle.

Thanks! We did too. Nothing like the random bike in front of the pyramid with not a tourist in sight except ourselves!

Hello again! I was so happy to see you’d posted! I agree with Lucile ~ one thing I love about blogging and reading blogs is getting the day to day real life stories from all over the world. Often it seems the news is telling us the dramatic and frightening things people do, yet our lives are made up of so much more! Thanks for taking us along on your sightseeing 🙂

Thanks Paula! Wonderful to hear from you. I am working at an international school and life goes on despite the sad circumstances of the flight etc. It hasn’t changed my day to day existence despite the fact that I won’t be heading to the Sinai anytime soon though. We feel very safe here.

My favorite photo (Other than that of your daughter which is a given as being a favorite) is the one with the bike in front of the pyramid. Great story. Lots to learn…some of it will stick!

Yes, we loved it. This random bike was just sitting there by itself. Before we knew it, both Jade and I were walking over to take a pic of it… similar minds.

It’s been a while since I. United you in Egypt… 😉
That’s a fascinating country indeed, and you make it sound less scary than what the media shares.
These images are also inviting. Love the featured image of the Pyramid. It might be incredible to be in front of one, and like Jade, inside one.

Yes it was fascinating. Jade is feeling the pain in her legs today from climbing down into and then up again out of it.And no it doesn’t feel scary at all to live here. In fact, usually quite the opposite. A lot of security in place and people are very friendly to us.

So you definitely don’t regret not having joined her…
It’s great to hear this from someone who is a foreigner living there and not biased. Thanks.

No I don’t regret not having joined her. Her legs still hurt from being bent down and doing the incline 3 days later!!!
