So it has been a few Egyptian moons since I posted last but Jade and I are still living in Cairo and doing well. Not just well…really well. In fact, yesterday she told me that this year in Egypt has been her favourite year ever. Words to make a mom smile when deciding to alter the “normal” course for a high school Canadian teen.
Since my last post (November?!!) we spent Christmas in Cambodia. For those who know me, I used to live in Cambodia many many Cambodian moons ago. I was beyond excited to be able to explore the country this time through the eyes of a tourist who had the time to see and do things that my work existence hadn’t allowed so long ago.
While exploring, we came across a traditional form of medicine that I recalled from years ago. There was no way I could have forgotten the circle marks on my colleagues’ bodies as they came to work. The idea of cupping to relieve different ailments had never been on my bucket list nor was it this time!
However, as it was described as a relaxing form of treatment, something akin to massage, my husband was eager to give it a try. After reporting positively, Jade was eager to give it a try as well. The cups are attached to the back using a little heat and the resulting suction leaves a round circle for a couple of days. I must say that it looks much worse than it is! In fact, they both announced that it was a very enjoyable and relaxing experience. As to whether it works or not to help certain ailments, I will leave that for others to decide. In any case, it was an experience that none of us will forget!
That looks odd. Glad they found it relaxing!
Also love that your daughter is getting to experience life in another country and is loving it! That’s awesome! She will grow up far more aware of the world than many others.

Yes I agree that it looks really odd. I didn’t like the look of it at all. I guess the look was much worse than the feel. Thanks for commenting! Cheryl

Great to hear from you too! It has been a busy year with limited wifi and so busy at work that I have let some things drop sadly.

Glad to hear all is well 🙂 I was going to have cupping in Cambodia too, but then chickened out and went for a head massage instead, hehe!

I have heard multiple people say that it is great – but I just can’t get past how awful it looks for a couple days after it is done. That just doesn’t seem like it wouldn’t hurt!

Yes I can guarantee it doesn’t hurt as neither one in my family is up for extra pain… but it looks terrible afterwards and even during it. They couldn’t see it so they were fine with it but I didn’t like it!

I have seen a couple people on the beach or at the pool after they’ve had it done. Maybe I just worry if I did it, my back would stay that way!

That would be terrible as it looks so awful.

Thanks Anabel… going well but always busy. Teaching is busy and teaching Egyptian students has proven to be challenging, fun but very very tiring!

I’ve tried cupping before – a long time ago in combination with acupuncture in an attempt to cure my allergies. Nope, didn’t cure them, but at least I tried 😉
So glad to hear form you again~ and curious about what aspects of Egyptian living led to such teen happiness….looking forward to more posts!

Hi Paula, Sorry it didn’t work but at least you had an open mind to try it out. I was hesitant to do so myself! Jade loves her school, her friends and just living in Egyptian culture. It is like travelling but so much deeper. Also on our school holidays, we have travelled to Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand and Cambodia as well as the Red Sea and Alexandria in Egypt… my guess is the travel is the highlight!!

I think it must. She will probably end up even more adventurous than myself!

My husband did this once and I did not like the horrible marks it left in his back. And frankly, I don’t know if it did him any good 🙂 But if one enjoys it, then go for it hehe.

I did not like the looks of the marks at all! I couldn’t look at them but both of them said they forgot they were even there! I was the only one who could see them as they were on their backs.

You live a very interesting life. I have heard of cupping at least there is no medicine involved so it cannot hurt to try. Enjoy.

Yes, it just looks not so appealing but apparently it feels great. 🙂

Yeah! As I said, I’m glad to have summoned you and see you full of good news and cups on your back. Never tried it but now I’m less opposed. 🙂 I wish your best year continues indefinitely.

That’s interesting! But I agree, sounds like something I can leave to others. Christmas in Cambodia! Wow, that sounds so exotic to a person sitting in the rain here in Michigan! 🙂 Glad to hear from you!

Yes, Christmas in Cambodia was a special one. It really didn’t feel like Xmas without snow, Christmas trees etc. but there were a few indicators like crazy looking Santas and a few lights to make it seem like the holiday. I wouldn’t have changed it for the world though. Just being back in Cambodia made me happy!
